Baynes: From Screaming Bob Marley Out a Window Above a Bar to Building a Sound That Bridges Two Worlds

Picture a kid above a bar in Trinidad. Every night the music comes up through the floor. Bob Marley. Prophet Benjamin. Vybz Kartel. Mavado. His mother is working downstairs. He is at the window screaming the lyrics at the top of his lungs because the music is too good not to respond to.

That kid is Baynes. And everything he has become as an artist started in that window.

Born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Trinidad and Tobago from three years old, Baynes grew up with two complete musical worlds running parallel inside him. The Caribbean sound that filled the bar below him and the American hip-hop and R&B that his older cousins played on BET. Kendrick Lamar and Bob Marley. Joey Bada$$ and Vybz Kartel. 50 Cent and Sean Paul. All of it going in, all of it shaping the artist who would eventually figure out how to make something that held every single piece of that simultaneously.

He started writing in primary school. Entered Calypso and Soca Monarch competitions as a kid. Got a keyboard from his mother that he could not put down even though he could not play a note properly. Started producing and recording on a MacBook his cousin gave him. Committed fully at 18. Posted his first freestyle verse to Instagram and felt something shift.

Since then he has been building without stopping.

CALLALOO and the superpower of being in between

The name Baynes gave his sound is not random and it is not just branding. It is the most honest description of who he is and how he makes music.

CALLALOO is a Trinidadian dish. Everything goes into the pot. Everything blends. What comes out is entirely its own thing. Soca, Calypso, Rap, Reggae, Dancehall and Afrobeats all going into one creative space and producing something that sounds like none of them individually but carries the DNA of all of them.

Most artists who come from dual cultural backgrounds eventually have to choose which side of themselves to present to the market. Baynes refused that choice and built a sound that lives in the space between instead.

"Being all mixed up like Callaloo," he says. "That is my superpower."

The analytics back that up in a way that cannot be argued with. His audience connects as deeply in Trinidad, Jamaica, Barbados and Guyana as it does in DC, Philly, New York and Atlanta. Two very different worlds pressing play on the same music for very different but equally valid reasons. That is what a real crossover looks like.

The company, the discipline and the data

Baynes turned down label deals. Not out of stubbornness but out of clarity. None of the deals that came to him fit what he was building. So he built his own structure instead.

Inn House Studios is his company, not a label in the traditional sense, and the distinction matters to him. As the founder he is in the numbers as much as he is in the booth. Watching where people are pressing play. Which cities are pulling up. What is connecting and what is not. That data feeds directly back into his creative and rollout decisions and the result is an independent operation that moves with both artistic intention and business intelligence behind it.

He also replaced motivation with discipline a long time ago. That might be the most important creative decision he has ever made.

"Motivation comes and goes," he says. "Discipline shows up either way."

Every release, every episode of his live series, every single he rolls out properly instead of rushing past, every West Coast collaboration being built carefully in the background. All of it is the product of an artist who shows up because he built a system around showing up. Not because he happened to feel like it that day.

What is moving right now and what is coming

"Sunrise" is his newest single and it is gaining real momentum. He is giving it a proper rollout, building the wave intentionally rather than chasing the next thing before this one has had its moment.

"Callaloo" is a fan favorite that is still climbing. The song that named his sound has become the song people come back to, which says everything about how well he executed the concept.

"1/2 Way Off the Porch," his live performance series filmed at Trinidad venues, dropped its second episode on July 1st on YouTube. It features "Sunrise," "You and Me" and "Callaloo" performed live, giving his international audience a direct window into what he looks and sounds like in a room with real energy behind him.

West Coast collaborations with legendary artists are in the works. No announcements until everything is locked. But it is coming and the fact that it is coming at all reflects how far the CALLALOO sound has already traveled.

The door stays open

Baynes makes music to open doors. Not just for himself but for anyone who finds their way into the world he is building.

"If one person finds their own way through my music," he says, "that opens a door for the next person to walk through."

He started from above a bar in Trinidad screaming Bob Marley lyrics out a window. He built from a MacBook his cousin gave him. He turned down labels. He built a company. He created a genre. He approached a million views on a reel. He premiered a live series. He is negotiating with West Coast legends.

And he is still just getting started on what CALLALOO can become.
